Police warn of scam involving man posing as utility worker

Authorities in Atlantic County are warning residents of a scam in which a man has been posing as a utility worker and tries to solicit money.

A woman reported to Galloway Township Police that a man came to her door, claiming to work for Atlantic City Electric, and asked for $45 in exchange for him resetting her meter.  Police say the woman refused and asked for identification, and the man told her he would come back later and rip her meter off of her house if she didn’t comply.  The man left without further incident.  Police in Egg Harbor City got reports of a similar incident.

Both victims described the suspect as a white man driving a dark colored pick-up.

No items were reported stolen in either incident, and Atlantic City Electric says its employees would not be involved in this type of solicitation.

Anyone with information should contact police.
