What is Americorps, and what do they do?

Americorps is a national service program that engages 18-25 year olds in a yearlong service term in different areas around the country.  Members receive a small stipend to cover their living expenses, and they also earn an education award to use toward future schooling or student loans.  Their usual responsibilities range from trail building and tree planting to working with kids in schools.   When a disaster strikes, Americorps members are deployed as a resource to assist communities in the recovery effort in a variety of ways, including:
•    Managing evacuee shelter operations
•    Organizing volunteer efforts
•    Providing FREE clean up, muck out, home gutting services to residents affected by the storm.
•    Connecting affected residents to available resources
•    Managing donations
Americorps members work closely with FEMA and volunteer agencies in order to best serve affected areas.  The Americorps presence in Atlantic County is primarily involved in the clean-up effort, but is also tied in to donations management and volunteer coordination.
See our flyer on the following page for ways in which we can connect with you!
