Protect yourself from identity theft

There are many ways for people to obtain information about you and attempt to steal your identity – allowing them to drain your bank accounts, run up your credit cards and even apply for and receive new credit cards and loans in your name. Some steps you can take to make it harder for identity thieves to turn you into a victim:

– Do not carry your Social Security card or birth certificate with you.

– Do not use your birth date as a password.

– Do not write down important passwords and carry them with you – memorize them.

– Shred financial documents before throwing them out.

– Check your credit card statements every month for unusual activity.

– Never give out personal or financial information over the phone unless you initiated the contact.

– If your purse or wallet is stolen, notify your bank, credit card company and the credit bureaus immediately, along with the police. In Brigantine, contact the 609-266-7414
